Autumn Lantern

There once was a stone lantern who made its home under a magnificent Japanese maple tree. The maple tree had been there for years and years and years. It showed its great wisdom in its rough bark and numerous branches. At night, the lantern would shine, sending out light through its tiny window for anyone who wanted to see. One day, a little girl came over to play. Sitting next to her grandfather she asked, "Gramps, what's your most favorite tree in your garden?" "Well," he chuckled, "I'd have to say it's that one," as he pointed to the Japanese maple.

Many moons pass. The girl sits down to remember him. Far away, the lantern illuminates a passage way though the branches to the stars shining above.
