One early morning I lay looking out of the window deep in thought. The sun was just coming up along Haleakala Crater but it’s warmth hadn’t touched our garden yet. Outside the window I watched the dark banana leaves sway in the breeze.

I was pondering how to live with more joy. “I wonder how I could be happier?” I said out loud.

Right then, two egrets flew by, glowing gold in the sunlight. The contrast between the dark garden and the shimmering egrets was stunning. My heart leapt as my question was answered: I can choose to be happy right now, in this very moment. The choice is always mine.
